Illinois has 58,784 registered charities on the current register extract, of which 17,021 reported income in their latest return. Together they reported $121.38bn of income. The median charity took in $166k, while the largest tenth reported $3.6m or more, so a typical donation goes to a far smaller organisation than the household names at the top of this list.

Income is concentrated: the ten largest charities account for 35% of the total. Across the whole group, 935 charities have a note from the register, such as overdue accounts or three years of spending above income, and those notes are shown on each charity's page.
